The Bexsero vaccine against meningococcal B disease is safe and effective and is recommended for infants and toddlers aged two months and older.
The meningococcal bacteria (Neisseria meningitides), sometimes called the “bad bacteria,” can cause inflammation of the brain cortex (meningitis), a contagious and fatal disease, blood poisoning, and other infections. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, vomiting, and sometimes a rash. The bacteria are spread through respiratory secretions from an infected person or carrier. In some infected people, the bacteria are found in the nose and throat and do not cause invasive disease. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, it can cause serious illness that can become life-threatening within hours.
With appropriate treatment, the disease has a mortality rate of 5% to 10% of those infected. Without proper treatment, mortality can reach 50% of patients. Even if recovered, neurological complications can occur, including developmental delays, paralysis, deafness, and more.
