Gliadel is used for lioblastoma and glioma in addition to surgical treatment.
After removal of a malignant neoplasm, the patient remains at risk of developing relapses, since it is quite difficult to resect all tumor cells. The plates are placed directly into the area of the removed tumor and dissolve there over several weeks. This provides a local cytostatic effect that acts directly on the surrounding tissue, destroying the remaining degenerated cells.
