Keppra – injection solution for epileptic seizures.
Levetiracetam – the active substance of Keppra is a pyrrolidone derivative (S-enantiomer of α-ethyl-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine-acetamide), differs in chemical structure from known antiepileptic drugs.
Levetiracetam induces antiepileptic protection in various animal models of partial and primary generalized seizures, without exhibiting a proconvulsant effect. The main metabolite of levetiracetam is inactive.
In humans, the activity of levetiracetam in epilepsy with both partial and generalized seizures (epileptiform discharges/photoparoxysmal reaction) confirms its broad pharmacological profile.
72.2% of patients taking levetiracetam showed a 50% or greater reduction in weekly seizure frequency in patients with PGTC seizures. In ongoing long-term follow-up, 47.4% of patients were free of tonic-clonic seizures for at least 6 months, and 31.5% of patients were free of tonic-clonic seizures for at least one year.
