NorLevo contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel and is a medicine used to prevent pregnancy in an emergency, i.e. within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse or in the event of a failed contraceptive method, such as:
a torn or forgotten condom;
forgetting to take an oral contraceptive (“pill”) beyond the maximum allowable period of time;
premature removal or slippage of the vaginal diaphragm or cervical cap;
sexual intercourse during the expected fertile phase with periodic abstinence (temperature method);
rape.
Such preparations are also known as morning-after pills.
According to studies, levonorgestrel prevented pregnancy in 52-85% of affected women.
