Valcyte is an antiviral agent. Its clinical effectiveness has been proven by inhibiting the proliferation of cytomegaloviruses in the cells of patients suffering from AIDS, from an initial value of 46% to less than 10% after one month of taking the drug.
The main active component of the drug is the valyl ether compound of ganciclovir (prodrug), which, after entering the body with the help of intestinal and liver esterases, is very quickly phosphorylated into ganciclovir, which is an artificial analogue of deoxyguanosine. The latter can inhibit the reproduction of viral components of herpes.
