Description

Varenicline is the active ingredient of Champix, which is temporarily not produced by Pfizer. A worthy replacement is the drug Varenicline from Ratipharm.

The drug is prescribed to patients who cannot quit smoking on their own (from the age of 18). Additional indications are severe manifestations of withdrawal syndrome. The drug helps to alleviate the discomfort associated with reducing the usual dose of nicotine or completely giving up cigarettes. In addition, varenicline helps to cope with psychological dependence, as it gradually reduces the feeling of pleasure from the smoking process.

Being a partial agonist, varenicline binds to α4β2-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. At the same time, it acts as an antagonist in the presence of nicotine. Unlike nicotine, the substance stimulates α4β2 receptors to a much lesser extent. Thus, varenicline blocks its action and activates the mesolimbic dopamine system, a neuronal mechanism responsible for the pleasure of smoking and the formation of nicotine addiction. The high efficiency of varenicline is achieved precisely due to its partial agonism in relation to α4β2-nicotinic receptors. By binding to them, the substance reduces the craving for smoking and alleviates the symptoms of withdrawal syndrome. Thus, taking this drug, a person no longer experiences pleasure from cigarettes, which contributes to a successful and rapid fight against smoking.
