Zavedos is an antitumor drug from the group of anthracycline antibiotics. Idarubicin, being integrated into the DNA molecule, interacts with topoisomerase II and inhibits the synthesis of nucleic acids. Idarubicin is highly lipophilic and is characterized by a higher rate of penetration into cells compared to doxorubicin and daunorubicin.
The main metabolite of idarubicin, idarubicinol, has antitumor activity and has less pronounced cardiotoxicity than idarubicin.
Used for acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lung cancer.
