The drug is an antidepressant that helps people quit smoking.
Take Zyban exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
When you start taking Zyban, you can continue to smoke for about 1 week after you start taking the medicine. Set your quit date in the second week of treatment. Talk to your doctor if you have trouble quitting after you have been taking Zyban for at least 7 weeks.
Your doctor may prescribe nicotine patches or gum to help you quit smoking. Read all directions and safety information for the nicotine product. Do not smoke at any time if you are using a nicotine product with Zyban. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects.
You may experience nicotine withdrawal symptoms when you quit smoking, including: increased appetite, weight gain, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, slow heart rate, cravings to smoke, and feelings of anxiety, restlessness, depression, anger, frustration, or irritability. These symptoms may occur with or without taking medications like Zyban.
Quitting smoking may also cause new or worsen mental health problems, such as depression.
You should not suddenly change your dose or stop taking this medication unless you have an attack while taking this medication. Stopping suddenly may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
